I grew up in Maidstone, Kent. I left school aged 16 and, eager to taste the romance of the road, hitch-hiked to France with dreams of joining the French Foreign Legion. Dissuaded at the regiments' gates in Marseille by two German fugitives I went to Egypt instead.
